Lent is an invitation to slow down and intentionally seek the Lord over 40 days. We do this individually and as church in a number of ways. Below is some information and resources to help you make the most of this time. We hope it will a fruitful time with the Lord.

Here is a 1 minute video from the Church of England explaining about Lent.
PAUSE AND PRAY

Every Tuesday you’re invited to gather with others from CHBC committing to intentionally Pause and Pray at 12.30pm (CHBC) and 8pm (Zoom). The book club then follows these meetings (see below for more info).
For those already following a pattern for Lent, this gathered time of prayer could just fold into your plan; for others who are unsure, why not give this a go?
Of course it is never easy nor convenient to add these times in. Lent invites us to imitate Jesus more closely by intentionally prioritising our UP life with Father God. Here’s some ideas to help you plan:
When could I fit in prayer?
- Wake up ten minutes earlier.
- As you travel to and from school / work / a shopping trip.
- Pause for five minutes before you get out the car / after leaving the bus.
- Whilst the kettle boils for a hot drink and as you drink it.
- Give up a meal (if safe) and use the time to pray.
- Go for a (short) walk or find a quiet place to sit.
- Pause before going to sleep.
Here are some suggestions for those who find it hard…
- to know how to pray: use our weekly prayer (coming via email);
- to find time: say a prayer, or the Lord’s Prayer, whilst washing your hands / taking a shower / when you’d normally be on social media;
- with family: involve them using dice prayers / buy some devotional dippers and use when eating with a simple prayer / discuss a verse over food and offer a simple prayer / listen to an all-age worship song (see below) then offer a prayer in response.
Here are some suggestions for those who are creative:
- If you enjoy singing: let the lyrics of a worship song shape your prayers;
- If you you like writing: journal a prayer / create a psalm of praise/lament;
- If you’re arty: pray as you create something based on a Bible verse (over time) / buy a colouring devotional book and pray as you decorate the verse;
- If you want to dig deeper: join our book club (see below) or visit a Christian retailer online to find other Lent devotional books.

Reading together: Let Me Go There — The Spirit of Lent (Paula Gooder)

In this book, Gooder helps us explore ‘some of the key events in the life of God’s people that occur in the wilderness. Through these Bible stories and reflections, we’re given not only a deeper understanding of God’s nature, but a picture of the character and the cost of discipleship, and a pattern for living as followers of Jesus in today’s world. As we go into the wilderness together, Gooder shows us that while the desert can be a place of fear and desolation, it is also the very setting that God may choose to meet us and call us into a new way of being and living.’
As always, the choice of book is designed to offer you a conversation partner. You might not agree with everything the author says but I hope they will help stimulate thoughts (old or new) that will be helpful on your journey with Christ.

b) someone roll the dice
c) chat about some ideas
d) someone offer a simple prayer
e) repeat as many times as you have time / engagement
